But when artist couple Ken and Julia Yonetani wanted to put their uranium glass chandeliers on display at Artereal Gallery in Rozelle, they asked ANSTO to give their project a green light. Green is, in the fact, the operative word. The 15 chandeliers in the Crystal Palace glow a beautiful but eerie fluorescent green, thanks to their UV light globes that react with the uranium in the glass beads which make up the decorative components of the chandeliers. Black covering on the gallery's glass front doors accentuates the effect. The chandeliers were given the ANSTO all-clear.

ANSTO noted that uranium glass has been in use for years. "Uranium has been used in glass decorations, jewellery and some ceramic tiles since the early 19th century for its colour, glaze and ability to fluoresce under certain light," ANSTO wrote. As they worked on the chandeliers, the Yonetanis left any minor imperfections undisturbed. This is their comment on the dangers of the ageing infrastructure at many nuclear facilities. The couple will produce about 30 chandeliers to represent every single nuclear nation in the world. They were inspired to create Crystal Palace as a result of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, where many people remain vigilant and anxious. "In Japan now people can buy a Geiger counter at a convenience store," Julia Yonetani says. People have been measuring their local radiation levels and posting their readings on an on-line community radiation map.

Yonetani says most of the uranium glass they used was made from depleted uranium. "We're recycling nuclear waste," she says. Dr Gene Sherman, one of Sydney's most prominent contemporary art collectors, has just bought a uranium glass artwork by the Yonetanis called What the Birds Knew. The work is on view at Gallery 4A.
