Thieves "gutted" the Co Clare mansion of Gary McNamara, son of Dolores, stripping it of all its chandeliers, light fittings, brass items and copper piping on dates in August and September 2013. Mr McNamara and his wife Michelle purchased Tinerana House, in east Clare, from a consortium for €1.46m at the end of January 2013. It is understood that the McNamaras paid an additional €2m for 270 acres of surrounding lands in the estate on the shores of Lough Derg. Yesterday at Ennis Circuit Court, Judge Gerald Keys imposed a four-year sentence on Jeffrey Lee (44) of Cosgrove Park, Moyross, Limerick and suspending the final 18 months.

Judge Keys said that Mr McNamara did not have insurance cover as the 19th century 16-bedroom house was unoccupied at the time and the €128,778 in damage was "a personal loss to him". He said: "I find it difficult to accept that the theft was carried out by one person as the extent of damage was unlikely caused by one person." The court heard the value of the items stolen was around €10,000 but the vast amount of the €128,778 cost from the burglary arose the damage caused in removing the fittings from ceilings, floors and bathrooms.
