The Perch Light by London-based architect and designer Umut Yamac sits perfectly at the intersection of form and function: the bird-shaped light is made to look like a folded origami creation that’s illuminated from the inside. Made from actual synthetic paper, the elegant light is counterbalanced and rocks back and forth at the slightest touch or disturbance in the air. Yamac originally designed the light in 2014 as a limited edition of 20, but recently created a new chandelier-style configuration called the Perch Light Family for Moori that launched at Salone del Mobile in Milan. Mademoiselle Maurice (previously here and here) recently produced the mural “The Lunar Cycle” in collaboration with the French Mathgoth Gallerie, a temporary piece that pays tribute to the hundreds of residents who were temporarily uprooted due to the upcoming demolition of the building. Composed of 15,000 colorful origami birds, the piece forms the cycles of the moon against the dark background of the wall and covers over 21,000 square feet of space—making it the largest urban mural ever created in Paris.

Each origami is painted after folding using a solution deemed “Maurigami” by Mademoiselle Maurice, making the pieces nearly indestructible. At the beginning of 2015, origami enthusiast Cristian Marianciuc challenged himself to create a new origami crane daily for 365 days. Marianciuc says each piece is influenced by the day he’s having, a sort of visual record of the moment set against the folded backdrop of a paper bird. The whimsical cranes are generally more decorative rather than exploring folding techniques, but it doesn’t make them any less fun to look at. To see more, he posts everyday on Instagram. Scientists at MIT have pulled up a very tiny curtain on their newest invention: a 1.7cm square robot capable of assembling itself like a piece of origami. The Untethered Miniature Origami Robot is powered by a small neodymium magnet and four electromagnetic coils underneath the robot’s surface that create magnet fields necessary for it to operate.

The small robot can walk on different surfaces, climb, carry objects twice its own weight, swim in shallow water, burrow, and it even completely dissolves in an acetone solution leaving behind just the magnet. So what can we do with super tiny self-folding robots? Researchers hope to develop even smaller autonomous robots with additional sensors that can dissolve in water. Such tiny devices could have a variety of medical uses when introduced inside of a human body, maybe zapping cancer cells or cleaning clogged arteries. Brill, who thinks of his Flora Fauna collection of prints as a “field guide of discovery,” has clearly been paying close attention to the small things that differentiate one species of hummingbird from another (he also has a mammal and canine series), and documenting his findings in handsomely stylized illustrative form. In addition to a brightly-hued bird graphic, each signed print bears the name of the bird species, as well as its associated bird call. Flora and fauna are more than merely an artistic device for Brill: he donates 1% of profits from sales of his prints to animal and environmental charities.
