You could pluck one off the rails at this new boutique store for £50 or less.

But once they're gone, they’re gone. That’s because this shop in Sycamore Road, overlooking Bournville Green, is being run by Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. But this is no ordinary charity store, it will be taking the cream of the clothes donated to the other branches that are run to raise funds for the hospice. “It is really about us having the higher end brands in a ladies only boutique which allows us to have destination shop,” explains Pam Dean, the area retail manager for the hospice. “Some people won’t be seen with the same handbag twice. This store will allow them to change their look at a fraction of the cost than if they were buying brand new.” The boutique will stock ladies clothes, accessories, hats, jewellery and, of course, shoes. By creating a more exclusive experience, the store will be able to charge what it feels is right for the quality of the donated clothing – though it will still be a bargain buy compared to the original price. “It will be designer makes and some high street brands as well,” explains Pam. “I suppose it is a £10 plus value, but we are aiming higher, £25 plus.

It will be dependent on the stock coming into the other stores.” The idea for the store came from the work Mary Portas did with Save the Children in setting up the Living and Giving shops, helping to change the way people looked at charity shops and second hand clothes. “A lot of charity shops have upped their game and reinvented themselves with laminate flooring and changed lighting,” says Pam. “They have got into niche marketing. Some stores just do menswear, Barnardo’s has got children stores while others sell furniture. “You are always looking to evolve and make the most from what has been very kindly donated by the general public.” The Bournville boutique has a luxury look to match the quality of the clothes it is selling, with chandelier lights and a cabinet donated from the hospice’s furniture store which has been upcycled by spraying it silver. Pam says they are hoping the upmarket look and feel will appeal to shoppers who might want an ever-changing wardrobe of stylish outfits for social events.

Or students looking for a vintage buy or something they can customise. “Opinions about charity shops have changed. I don’t think there is the stigma that there may have been about them a decade or so ago,” says Pam. “Programme like Dawn Porter’s on vintage clothing have given creative people some great ideas about how to take an item and redesign it to create a unique look. And it is very much in keeping with the recycling and re-using way forward.” With Bournville College on the doorstep, the boutique will be looking at bringing in some fashion students for special events, such as pop ups or store take-overs. It is all about location and there are plans to open another boutique branch in affluent Solihull. The Bournville shop is on the green, opposite Selly Manor. “It is in the first run of shops, very close to a hairdressers and a little beauty parlour,” says Pam. “You can be ready for a night out in three shops.” The boutique is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, and on Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
