Vache (David) Soghomonian has been breathing new life into old lights for years, priding himself on running a green business aimed at reducing waste and reusing or recycling as many parts as possible. "People say 'If I couldn't find you, I would have thrown it out'," he says. Soghomonian specializes in repairing and restoring antique lamps, fixtures and chandeliers, although he can work on anything from halogens to fluorescent ballasts.

"The antiques are the ones that really get my attention," he says. "I'm fascinated by them. Well, most of them. Some of the things people come in with are "hideous," Soghomonian admits with a laugh. "But they love it, it's theirs, it's been in their family." Where possible, Soghomonian uses original vintage parts in his repairs. That doesn't extend to wiring or sockets, but there are modern versions made to look old that are a good, and safe, substitute. Along with electrical components, Soghomonian can replace broken or missing crystals and glass shades, and he can solder stained glass. Faded paint can be refinished, while damaged fabric shades can be recovered. Soghomonian can also modify foreign lights to Canadian standards, or make adjustments to new lamps — for example, if a customer needs a centre wire to be longer. It generally takes two to four days to repair a table or floor lamp, and a week to a week and a half for a chandelier. For those willing to tackle a project themselves, The Lighting Guy has access to a host of parts and accessories, including shades, chains and specialty bulbs.

Although the majority of his business comes through restoration work and accessories, Soghomonian also sells complete chandeliers and lamps. "I've outgrown this," he admits, looking around his King Street East shop in Preston. "I need another location." Soghomonian started the business in 2006, working out of his garage in Kitchener. Much of his business comes through his website, word-of-mouth and referrals from retail lighting shops in the area. It's a rewarding profession, Soghomonian says, especially when he's able to restore a prized heirloom that's gone dark.
