They redefine the applied arts for the contemporary age. Their collaboration has created highly expressive, mainly one-off or limited edition works, from the outset. Often cast in bronze or, later, crafted from laser-cut marquetry, the physical potential and malleability of the materials they use is pushed to the hilt. Their approach is more in keeping with that of traditional guilds than anything industrial. For Studio Job, creation is pre-eminent over definition. Smeets describes it thus: “Unlike most, we are probably not coming from Modernism. Studio Job’s contribution is that we have rediscovered a lost path. Consciously and carefully, we are positioning decorative arts in the twenty-first century. Opulent, intricate and ironic, Studio Job combine an extraordinarily high level of craftsmanship with extreme ornamentation.

They reference both the traditional and the topical, the organic and the artificial. This narrative conveys a tension between the good and the bad exploring all facets of each. Their iconography is at once heraldic and cartoon-like, monumental and yet somehow primitive. De Paper chandelier is in twee versies te verkrijgen. De kleine kroonluchter (voor huis, tuin en keukengebruik zal ik maar zeggen) heeft een diameter van 90 centimeter en kost zo’n 2100 euro. Zijn grote broer heeft een diameter van 225 centimeter en is een prachtig object om een grote hoge ruimte mee te vullen. De XXL versie kost zo’n 6800 euro. Dat is voor een product van Studio Job aan de lage kant te noemen. De Paper chandelier wordt ook verkocht door MOOOI, dus is een redelijk commercieel ontwerp. Wat betreft kwetsbaarheid heb ik de Paper chandelier natuurlijk niet kunnen testen, maar volgens mij valt het wel mee hoe snel hij kapot gaat. MOOOI vermeldt er voor de zekerheid toch even bij dat hij niet buiten gebruikt kan worden. De kern bestaat uit MDF, maar de buitenkant is wel degelijk van papier, dus kwetsbaar voor vocht. Daarnaast is hij ook nog eens wit, dus super gevoelig voor vlekken. Lekker hoog hangen lijkt ons geen overbodige luxe. Wij vinden het opgeblazen ontwerp gewoon heel tof.
