Multiple mentions of another “m” word—millennials—illustrated how—and to whom—manufacturers approached design this time around.
Not surprisingly, more introductions and manufacturers embraced LED, which continues to evolve. Modernizing the chandelier was the theme among several lighting manufacturers, who showed how even clustering several pendants together can be an alternate to the traditional chandelier. Millennials in particular are comfortable combining styles for an eclectic look.waterford whittaker chandelier Consumers are trending away from traditional chandeliers, looking to do something different, said Jeff Dross, corporate director, education and industry trends, Kichler.waterford lismore 3 arm chandelier And larger pendants or groups of pendants provide an alternative. chandelier ff8“It creates instant scale,” said Brian Klein, marketing manager, Tech Lighting and LBL Lighting.
Fixtures themselves got larger: Feiss offered flush mounts in 20-inch and—its largest ever—30-inch sizes in one collection in response to customer requests, said Anthony Di Domenico, new product development manager for Feiss. LED continues to make inroads as technology evolves. “The three most exciting letters to hit our industry is LED,” said Rick Seidman, president and CEO, Quoizel. “In the last five years, it’s really changed. It’s starting to scale now; LED is less expensive.” And items don’t have to be modern, even traditional items can be updated with LED, he added. Midcentury modern is still a dominant trend, and one group that loves that style is millennials, several said. “They don’t have a direct connection to it,” as older generations do, said Dross. “They think it’s a cool, older style.” It’s also not a “hard, hard contemporary,” which makes it adaptable to many decors. At Tech Lighting, the sleek, midcentury modern Padrone has 22 LED stems that create a dramatic statement.
All of Tech’s LED items from now on will be 90 CRI, Klein said. Varaluz also added to the midcentury modern movement with Iconic, which is made of handforged recycled steel in the Philippines. Two other design themes seen in Dallas were wood and white. Kichler’s introductions included Cirrus, based on the walnut slats used in the 1960s and 1970s, and Passport, a linear look made of Danish blond wood. The Stix pendants from Troy Lighting incorporate real distressed wood slates with an antique gold finish. Hubbardton Forge added a white finish to some of its top-selling items, due to customer requests, such as its existing Double Cirque and Corona items, while LBL’s Togan collection consists of shapely white or white-and-metal pendants inspired by Moroccan design. Glass pendants in simple shapes also have a place. “It’s a move to clear from color,” said Lee Nemeth, senior vice president, ELK. “It’s more about the shape and the clear glass.” Gramercy and Dewdrop are two new glass pendant families from ELK.
Kenroy Home debuted its Schoolhouse pendant in clear glass this market. Hudson Valley Lighting showed its first collection of handblown glass, called Pomfret Billowy, a collection of thickly ribbed spindle-blown curved glass shapes with a tube-shaped filament bulb, in several colors as well as clear. Crystal also took on a modern element in a number of introductions. Lite Source added the Creola collection to its Elite series, which incorporates sleek chrome metal ribbons that surround strands of dangling crystals. “Creola is the embodiment of modern grace and exceptional value,” Bob Baker, vice president, sales and marketing, Lite Source. Varaluz’s Bask fixture incorporates pre-installed crystal spheres and bobeches with handforged recycled steel. Handmade in the Philippines, it is handpainted in a gold dust finish. Manufacturers debuted multitoned finishes in softer looks. Feiss, for example, unveiled its two-toned gilted gold finish, which is not harsh like brass or gaudy like traditional gold can be, said Di Domenico.
At Tech Lighting, satin gold is a new finish, though “chrome is coming back strong,” said Klein. “People are asking for it.” Among Hubbardton Forge’s introductions was the 4 Seasons, a line of linear LED fixtures, each of which evoked a season, such as falling leaves for its autumn design, and raindrops for spring. As outdoor furnishings get more upscale, manufacturers are bringing out lighting to match. Feiss’ new Arramore, for example, is an elegant, wet-rated, laser-etched LED fixture that “doesn’t look outdoors,” Di Domenico said, and would be ideal for indoor applications as well. The Carson group from Hinkley Lighting can also go outdoors. Made of clear, seedy glass with a vintage iron finish, it includes three globe pendants from 10 to 26.25 inches in diameter, and a sconce. In addition, Kichler added four outdoor chandeliers this market. Maxim Lighting’s introductions heavily centered on outdoor designs and expansion of LED technology built into fixtures.
