Leftovers is a green business model, based on upcycling & repurposing furniture. We are as surprised as the next person when it comes to rescuing some of the furniture slated for landfill. We are a local, community-based business (we don't have trucks huffing and puffing around like larger stores which need everything delivered from far away). We reuse wrapping materials, boxes and bags • We use ECO COPY for our minimal printing needs • We are as paperless as possible • We light our stores with lots of CFL's • We keep our store shiny and clean using products with refillable bottles • All staff use green canteens instead of disposable water bottles • Leftovers does not own a car- we use zipcar! • All employees walk or take public transit to work Classics always come around again, and beautiful design never goes out of style. This is one of the keys to our success. Finding that one treasure that makes your heart beat a little faster is what keeps decorators coming back to Leftovers.
But furniture's not the only thing that's "reloved" here: all our store pets are pre-owned! We adopt rescue animals in need from SF Animal Care and Control (currently we have two little dogs, one three-legged cat, and four doves). Second Chance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides people, materials and the environment with a second chance. We deconstruct buildings and homes, salvage usable materials and make those available to the public for reuse through our 200,000 square feet of retail space. pizzeria chandelier eforie nordWith the revenue generated, we provide job training and workforce development for those with employment obstacles in the Baltimore region.chandelier swing la noire See Bottom of Site for More Connecting Optionsvisual comfort dexter chandelier
Why Work with Second Chance? Second Chance, Inc. creates "green collar jobs" by taking apart buildings that would otherwise be demolished and dumped in a landfill. We then offer the reclaimed materials and other donated goods to the public at a discount, helping fund our job training and workforce development programs that primarily serve those who face barriers to employment. Triple Bottom Line Focus We are a dynamic, established social enterprise with a true triple-bottom-line focus, always striving to give people, material and the environment meaningful second chances at new life. “Sustainability” is much more than an industry buzzword to us. We divert many tons of perfectly good materials from the wastestream, thus greatly decreasing natural resource extraction, energy use, landfill burden and their harmful ecological impact. We believe that people matter more than profits and those genuinely seeking a second chance should get it. By equipping individuals with life and vocational skills, we instill self-worth and help change families, communities and beyond..
Our model makes financial sense for everyone, offering significant tax advantages to donors and significant savings to consumers. The result is the creation of living wage jobs for those who've faced vocational challenges. Learn more about who we are and what we do from the broad media exposure we've enjoyed. Review awards and recognition that we've been humbly honored to have received through the years. Glance through various videos and visual creations that help tell the Second Chance story. Combining something new with something old, Canadian design house Preloved specializes in turning vintage dress wear into modern recycled fashions. Our Green Room neighbors at Designers & Agents LA last June have recycled more clothing than ever this past year, salvaging 60,000 wool sweaters, 12,000 t-shirts, 5,000 dress shirts and 6,000 trench coats in 2008 alone! Preloved CEO, designer, and founder Julia Grieve successfully marries fashion with ethics for a brand born and manufactured exclusively in Canada. We heart Preloved’s eco-aesthetic and agenda, and we think you will, too. Earlier this year, Preloved was confronted with a significant obstacle when a fire broke out in Toronto’s popular shopping district, Queen Street West, ravaging Preloved’s flagship Toronto store along with several other neighboring businesses. Without diminished spirit, Preloved showed a slew of unique new styles for their Fall collection at this year’s L’Oreal Fashion Week in Toronto in March.
