Belleville lost a true pioneer last Friday when Tom Apicella was called home to Eternity. Tom was 79 and left behind a loving wife, four children and eight grandchildren. I first met Tom some 35 years ago when his youngest daughter, Jennifer, was a freshman at Belleville High. I had heard what a good basketball player Jenny was on the Suburban level, but I don’t think anyone, outside of Tommy and his immediate family, could ever imagine the impact she'd have on the court during her four years at BHS (1980-1984).
Tom, himself, was a very good athlete, especially in football. He graduated from Belleville High School, where he was a star lineman for the Bellboys. Later, Tom settled in town with his wife, Eileen, and the couple raised a family. Eldest daughter Eileen was followed by a son, Tom, then Jennifer and finally, John. All four children would go through the Belleville school system. Tom and John both played football while Eileen was a cheerleading captain and Jennifer, of course, set new records for excellence on the basketball court. John would later coach football at his alma mater, under John Senesky. Besides the athletic careers, the Apicellas were also the epitome of a small business giving back to a community. The Chandelier, a popular catering facility on Franklin Avenue in Belleville, has been the home for thousands of gatherings, including many athletic dinners, not to mention weddings and just about any other event you can think of. Tommy employed so many young kids in town in various roles at the restaurant, and for many it was their first job.
"My very first boss was Tommy," recalled former BHS standout wrestler George D’Alessandro. "I washed dishes at the Chandelier and he always treated me and Guy Westpy like family. He was a great man and my sincerest condolences to his family." Big George’s recollection was pretty much the thought of so many others, when it comes to Tom Apicella. "And suddenly, it's hard to find, the memories you've left behind. Remember, do you remember?" Tom Apicella was a family man, through and through. Most of all, he had a generous heart, and did so many things for people that were never talked about, because, for Tom, giving back to his town was second nature and he didn’t want any accolades. He did love to watch his children compete, athletically, and excel, academically. I remember when I first got to know Jennifer, she and I would play these marathon basketball games in her backyard. I’m talking about four hour games, in January, outdoors, until 2 a.m. The games only stopped because either Tom, or his wife, Eileen, would peak their head out the house window and say something along the lines of "do you guys know what time it is?"
And Jen would say, "come on dad, just let us play one more game." And Tom would pretend to be mad, but would then say "okay, go ahead." It was a different world, for sure, and one that I was grateful to be a part of. "The laugher and the tears. The shadows of misty yesteryears. The good times and the bad, you've seen, and all the others, in between. Remember, do you remember, the times of your life?" Tom Apicella’s smile was sincere. He was also a straight shooter, so you always knew where you stood. He was always supportive. As his children grew up and went on to college, Tom took pleasure in seeing them take part in the running of the Chandelier. After all, it was the family business. His message never wavered. Give the customer a fair price, good food and a nice experience, and they'll come back. And there were very few events that Tom, himself, wouldn’t oversee, because for Tom, Belleville and his work went side-by-side. "Here comes the setting sun. The seasons are passing, one by one.
So gather moments while you may, collect the dreams you dream today, remember, will you remember, the times of your life?" Growing up in Belleville, when I was a kid, was special. We were influenced by a lot of wonderful men and women, who did nothing more than work hard and help create a community we were all proud to be a part of, and Tom Apicella can put his name at the top of that list. "They don't make like them Tommy any more," said Perry Mayers, a one-time Belleville High football star who went on to a distinguished career in law enforcement. "One of the Belleville greats," recalled Ken Burde, a long-time art teacher at Belleville High. "He was a great man, with a big heart, who cared so much about others," said former BHS teacher and football coach, Joe D’Ambola. "Great guy, and a great family," said former BHS basketball star Simone Edwards. And the list will go on and on. Tommy Apicella has left a legacy that will never be forgotten. Thanks, Tom, for being my friend all these years, and allowing me to know your family and call them dear friends.
