Yep, forget the TV dinners, here’s the flat-out dinner in the Arab floor lounge – traditionally known as a Majlis.

For Zubarah restaurant in the centre of Huddersfield offers that Middle Eastern experience – a kind of laze and graze if you will. That’s the upstairs banqueting room but if you want something a little more formal such as tables and chairs there’s plenty of them downstairs.

chandelier lauriana mae mp3 The menu isn’t extensive – that’s certainly no bad thing – as Zubarah is out to give you an authentic experience of some of the Middle East’s most well-known and best-loved dishes.

And they go in for presentation. There is a clear pride in everything that’s brought to the table. One of our starters, hummus (£2.95) came in a swirly sculpture surrounded by slices of tomato and lemon and a mint leaf on top. Now who gets it like that at home? Served with warm, fresh pitta bread, it was the perfect show-starter. We also chose a tomato, feta and shallots salad (£3.50) – plum tomatoes, mixed lettuce, green shallots, black olives and feta cheese dressed with olive sauce and topped with roasted walnuts and sesame seeds. Not a lot going on there then. A cracking salad – so much taste and flavour going on it gives a summery blast to a miserably wet November evening. A third starter was Arayess (£4.95), grilled pitta bread stuffed with mince lamb, chopped onion and parsley. Even though it had the meat it felt like a light starter – certainly not heavy, man. And we dipped it in the hummus. On to the mains which were signature dishes – lamb margoog (£9.95), traditional Arab cuisine in a mixture of lamb, vegetables and flour and the other was shawarma (£9.95), marinated slices of grilled chicken with fresh spices, lemon and olive oil served with parsley Tahini sauce and tannour bread.

The margoog is quite a dense – you could even say sticky – dish with everything moulded together and the vegetables included aubergines and sweet potato. We’d not tasted anything quite like it before but it sure tasted good with the peppers giving it a crunch factor now and then. The shawarma is thin strips of chicken and becomes more like one of those moorish dishes you want to keep picking at and never leave alone until it’s gone. The flavours came across as full-on rather than spicy although there are curries and a biryani on the menu. But there was so much we had plenty to pack up and take home ... and they even popped some more pitta bread and hummus in for us. What we didn’t take home – probably because we couldn’t afford it and the kitchen table isn’t big enough – is the restaurant’s signature dish of Gazelle platter (£279 – yes, £279) which is slow roasted gazelle bedded on a large platter of seasoned rice served with Arab salad, spicy potatoes and specially prepared lamb stock and a variety of sauces.
