Dreamhome Heartaches by Adam Wallacavage It would be too much of a shock to the system if the octopus motif were to figure no more in work from Adam Wallacavage, who specializes in chandeliers that put their tentacles to work. However, as the antlers and skull of an elk may attest, Wallacavage’s latest series, entitled Dreamhome Heartaches, is made up of smaller lamps than usual; handy for when the stage for drama is simply not as wide. The pieces are of hand-sculpted epoxy clay or cast plaster, but for “his signature look, Wallacavage adds a thick glaze of secret sauce, producing a vibrant shimmering finish.” A show of new work by Adam Wallacavage runs from March 19 through April 6, 2011 at Corey Helford in Culver City.I’ll spare you the obvious comparisons to earrings (just know that I’m really holding back here!), but in my mind, there’s not a room in the home that could do without a little chandelier magic. (Full disclosure: my very first column for Design*Sponge was about chandeliers, so I’m a little sentimental about the topic!)

In searching through the sneak peek archives, I found plenty of fellow chandelier lovers — chandeliers in and over bathrooms, bedrooms, stairwells and dining room tables! If there’s space on the ceiling, chances are someone has tried to put a chandelier there. And if there’s no ceiling space, they can even look stunning as sculpture! Cephalopod aficionados looking to spice up their lighting should look to Adam Wallacavage's Octopus Chandeliers. His unusual light fixtures hold up their bulbs with sucker-bearing tentacles that come in a variety of colors and levels of kitsch. What's especially interesting about looking through Wallacavage's collection of chandeliers is how he achieves such different effects by changing the colors, arrangement of the legs, and accessories. His white and bronze chandeliers manage to be quite elegant, while his red ones are almost menacing, as if ready to drop on the head of an unsuspecting diner. Sometimes, however, he goes all out on the eccentricities of his lamps, adding eyeballs and Hello Kitty dolls for an intriguing bit of home decorating cheese.You can see many more of his chandeliers and other artwork on his website and his blog.ADAM WALLACAVAGE is known for his octopus chandeliers.
